Making Waves Film Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Highlights include the BAFTA nominated Outstanding British Film of the Year, new drama Ali & Ava, a screening of Ukrainian film Homeward which was Un Certain Regard at Canne 2019, plus a live cinema experience with The Front Room DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Fundraiser. Plus BFI hosted networking, a screenwriting workshop and the best of the 2022 Making Waves Film Short Film Competition of films from around the world, across the UK and here in the South.

Find out more about the support that BFI NETWORK offers new and emerging filmmakers in the South West region. Plus a screening of the official selection for the local films category of MWFF shorts competition.
BFI NETWORK Talent Executive Alix Taylor-Searle will talk through the upcoming call out for BFI NETWORK Short Film Production Funding and Early Development Feature Funding, which both close for applications in May. There will also be a Q&A with a filmmaker about their experiences working on a BFI NETWORK short film project.

Clio Barnard’s latest film charts an unlikely romance between two Bradford residents.
ALI and AVA, both lonely for different reasons, meet and sparks fly. Over a lunar month a deep connection begins to grow, despite the legacy of AVA's past relationship, and ALI's emotional turmoil at the breakdown of his marriage.
Starring Adeel Akhtar as Ali (Four Lions, The Night Manager) and Claire Rushbrook as Ava (Secrets and Lies, Enola Holmes)
Enveloped in music, humour and emotion, ALI & AVA is a heartfelt contemporary love story written and directed by BAFTA-nominated Clio Barnard (The Arbor, The Selfish Giant).
The feature screening includes a live Q&A with the score composer Harry Escott. Ali and Ava won the BIFA 2021 Best Music Award.

Making Waves Film Festival Fundraising Event
The Front Room presents ‘Home’
A fundraiser in aid of the humanitarian crisis in The Ukraine; a night of spoken word, music, film and performance responding to the theme of ‘Home’.
at No.6 Cinema
Home, a place of shelter, security for family and nourishment. The Front Room has invited a selected mix of spoken word presenters, musicians, artists, and filmmakers to respond to the theme of Home as part of a special benefit event to support the human tragedy occurring in Ukraine.
Expect an eclectic mixture of live cinema, animation, spoken word, and music from the contributing artists including:
- Spoken word with Steve Tasane
- Live animation with Matt Smith and Rusty Sheriff
- Choral sounds with Janet Ayers (and guests)
- India Kim presents new work in animation
- An audio visual journey with The Speech Painter
There will also be a selection of Ukrainian short films as part of the evening.
All proceeds will go towards the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Ukrainian filmmaker Nariman Aliev’s first feature film explores family bonds and motherland through a deeply affecting road-movie set in the disputed territory of Crimea. Having lost his oldest son in the war between Russia and Ukraine, Mustafa resolves to take the boy’s body to his native land: Crimea. Together, he and his younger son set out on a journey that will profoundly mark their relationship.
